Write a blog post reflecting on a time when you or someone you know was misunderstood because of a single story. How can limiting ourselves to one perspective be harmful? What can we do to make sure we see people and cultures more fully?
I have a slightly darker cousin, who wears glasses, and with his beard fully grown, he is often mistaken to be Indian. When he goes to Hispanic areas, people are surprised when he speaks Spanish leading them to ask where he comes from or how did her learn how to speak Spanish so guilty. He then tells them how his parents are Mexican and he was raised in Mexico for most of his childhood. Limiting ourselves to just the looks of people can confuse what the nationality of others can be. I guess TV has made the conclusion that all Hispanics/Latinos are one color when really they're not. Today, we did a CommnLit assignment and I liked how the author would also give their experience of how stereotypes have painted her culture from a different perspective. Today I feel good and I hope I get to go home to take a nap.
